Concert, 4pm: Baroque Cello with Tim Blomfield and Belinda Manwaring

" ... Of those of us who play a melody instrument, how many are aware of what is going on in the other parts? In Baroque music, how do the other parts, particularly the bass line and figures, influence our interpretation? This masterclass/workshop presented by Tim Blomfield (Salut!) is for all players of melody instruments, and will address these issues and more. People can choose to play in the masterclass, or observe the masterclass and take part in a few workshop activities related to understanding figured bass.

A registration form will be available from: emsqueensland@gmail.com

Masterclass participants are encouraged to send an expression of interest now!

The aim is to facilitate the approach described by Rameau (below) of a spontaneous, intuitive way of reacting to the musical environment as laid down in the bass-lines and their inherent harmony. This is of particular significance and importance to the any treble instrument player or vocalist who normally is not so well versed or developed in the language of the bass-line’s built-in harmonic progressions.

“…to the contrary, one must be led by the feeling that it [music] inspires, without thinking, without thinking a word, and then this feeling will become the instrument of our judgement. As for the reason, it [music] is present in the hands of everyone, we have taken it from Nature’s own breast; we have even proved that instinct reminds us [of music] at each moment, and in our actions and in our discourse (speech, discussions etc.)…” [trans.
