Adapted for theatre from Phyl Lobl’s original creation, "Dames and Daredevils for Democracy" uses song, drama and intensive research to present snapshots of some of the women* who were vital to the Australian struggle for women’s right to vote and to stand for elected office - something that Australia led the world in.
Our home-grown suffragists – who assisted the English suffragettes with their fight for ballot-box gender equality - are not household names like the Pankhurst sisters but their battles were as intense. Growing from the social attitudes and moral expectations of the time they fought a fight that was distinctly Australian, frequently touched with a disarming larrikinism, often leading the world in thought and actions, and as tough as colonial sisters had to be. Theirs is a splendid history.
