uitar Brisbane and Magda Community Artz present Euphoria!; a new collaboration which brings together one of the world’s finest mandolinists, Masataka Hori, with the exquisite guitar and piano duo, mimi duo ( Duncan Gardiner – guitar and Setsu Masuda – piano), and the combined forces of the wonderful Mandolins in Brisbane. This combination of mandolin, guitars, piano and orchestra promises a concert filled with fun and energy. The musicians will present gorgeous music from Spain, Italy, Japan and Australia, including numerous original works. Vivaldi’s sparkling mandolin Concerto in C Major and the rhythmical guitar concerto Spanish Impressions form the centrepiece of the program, capped off with Masataka Hori’s own orchestral extravaganza, Euphoria! The trio comprising Hori, Gardiner and Masuda will also present two acclaimed pieces dedicated to the victims and survivors of the tsunami disaster that affected vast areas of Japan in 2011.

About Masataka Hori

Mr. Hori studied mandolin with Mr. Takashi Kubota. He also studied abroad in Saarbrücken, Germany as an overseas trainee for Heisei Cultural Agency New Artists 2011 studying mandolin with celebrated mandolinist Mr. Juan-Carlos Muñoz. Mr. Hori has won many prestigious awards including the Tokyo Governor Prize (2002), 1st place in the Maebashi Mandolin Festival Quartet Competition (2005), and most notably, 1st place in the 10th Raffael Calace International Mandolin Solo Competition (2014).

Mr. Hori made his recording debut for Universal Music in 2009 performing alongside celebrated guitarist, Kaori Muraji, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. He released his first classical mandolin solo album “PRELUDIO”. Famed composer Mr. Shinichi Ikebe exclaimed
“this album will surely make a fresh impact to a wider musical scene not limited to the mandolin world”. He has appeared as a guest-starring mandolinist with the Nagoya Chamber Orchestra. He appeared in NHK "Music Garden", "J-MELO", "Cheers for Movie Music" and J-Wave "Classy Café" etc. He has performed as a soloist at the festival "Rencontres Pince-Cordes" held in Milkur (France) in 2011, the "Kobe International Music Festival" (2013) and Suntory foundation for arts summer festival 2015. He launched his own mandolin ensemble called "EUPHORIA" and went on to release a CD with the group. He produces concerts and composes and arranges music for the group besides his role as conductor. In addition, with composer and pianist Kazuhiko Hatata, he formed "Mandolicks" with musicians playing jazz fusion with bassist, Yoshihiro Naruse (Casiopea 3rd) and drummer, Nakazawa Tsuyoshi.

Since 2015, Mr. Hori has curated and produced the concert series "Il Mandolino Giapponese - another Italian culture". Its success is generating further concert activities. Mr. Hori currently plays a mandolin custom built by Mr. Daigoro Ochiai. Mr. Daigoro Ochiai’s mandolins are renowned worldwide, and cater for all of Mr. Hori’s demands and ideas without any limitation. New “S-H series” model was born. Mr. Hori writes regularly in a monthly mandolin magazine "Playing! Mandolin" in an article about mandolin performance and practice. Mr. Hori is the mandolin club music director at Dokkyo University, KMA Meguro School, and a Music School lecturer in Ikigaku and Iguchi. Most recently in 2017, he joined as an artist endorser of the world renowned Germany string maker, OPTIMA.

About mimi duo

In the hands of mimi duo(Duncan Gardiner – guitar and Setsu Masuda – piano), guitar and piano duets are breathtaking and beautiful. “Whether lulling or emphatic, they delighted the ear”, exclaimed The Westreviewer, Neville Cohn. Gardiner and Masuda each bring their own specialties to create a magical blend of music including exotic impressions from around the world to heartfelt originals, thoughtfully paired with poetry and visual art.

mimi duo has captivated audiences since their inception in 2012 and are establishing a lasting musical collaboration through their many concert engagements across the globe. The duo was a headline act at the recent Classical Guitar Festival Sydney in November 2017. 2016 saw mimi duo take to the international stage as they gave recitals across Japan to promote their debut album, Falling Like Tears. They were special guests at Japan’s biggest tsunami and earthquake charity concert, performing a world premiere at the Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall to over 2000 people. They returned to Japan to give concerts in January 2017, prior to concert engagements in Singapore, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. In 2015, mimi duo featured as guest soloists with the Fremantle Symphony Orchestra. mimi duo was also invited to perform at the historic Abbey Church at New Norcia. “It was the most moving, impressive and original concert we have had here” (Dom Robert Nixon, New Norcia). In 2013 mimi duo were special guests at a Perth Guitar Festival performing alongside internally renowned guitarist, Craig Ogden. The duo continue their regular soirées for Roses and Hearts: a concert series which raises funds for Red Cross, Japan.

Mandolins in Brisbane (MIB) is Queensland’s foremost mandolin and guitar ensemble. Founded in Brisbane, Queensland in 1998, Mandolins in Brisbane plays a varied repertoire from the renaissance to contemporary. Mandolins in Brisbane not only continues the well-established traditions of mandolin music founded in Italy, but also performs classical, folk, bluegrass and popular music from across the globe. Mandolins in Brisbane is conducted by classical guitarist and musical director, Joel Woods, and is led by principal mandolinist, Marissa Carroll.
