"Here's to Life" - Joan Baez Tribute & Amnesty International Benefit Concert

For so many of us, the singing of Joan Baez, has been a potent and life-long impetus in our personal and artistic lives - challenging us, nudging us, charming us all to be more aware of what we might achieve:

"I would just say that in my life, what gave my life meaning and where I was always the most complete... [it did not] come through money or fame, it was always when I was... standing with those whose voice was not heard and I was able to do something about that." - Joan Baez

Joan Baez has been a beacon of hope and a voice of courage throughout a career, spanning nearly 60 years. She is a dynamic and reassuring stimulus for many of our finest local musicians and Magda Community Artz is pleased to host an afternoon with some of our best loved local singers singing the songs that are quintessential Joan Baez.

Mary Chapin Carpenter has observed: "She has been a mentor, an inspiration and a role model for anyone who ever picked up a guitar and wanted to believe they could do more than just sing pretty songs. She has showed multiple generations that music can move and inspire as well as be a force for courage, solidarity, fellowship and justice."

In recognition of Joan's lifelong commitment to peace and social justice, and her involvement in helping establish Amnesty International in the US, this concert will be a benefit concert for Amnesty, Brisbane. Amnesty Representatives will be present to help focus us on why their work is so essential. Joan has long supported the work of Amnesty International and encourages those wishing to become involved in the advancement of human rights issues around the world to contact A.I.

We have chosen 17th July as it is the 10th anniversary of Joan receiving the "Distinguished Leadership Award" from the Legal Community Against Violence. At the annual dinner event, they honored her for her lifetime of work against violence of all kinds.
