"The Music of Antônio Carlos Jobim", by Peter Freeman - Book Launch

  • Brisbane Jazz Club 1 Annie St Kangaroo Point QLD 4169 Australia (map)

The Music of Antônio Carlos Jobim, by Peter Freeman.

Antônio Carlos Jobim has been called the greatest of all contemporary Brazilian songwriters. He wrote both popular and serious music and was a gifted piano, guitar and flute player. One of the key figures in the creation of the bossa nova style, Jobim’s music made a lasting impression worldwide, and many of his songs are now standards of the popular music repertoire.

The Tropical Dance Orchestra will be playing some Jobim tunes with full orchestration: 5 strings, 5 voices, piano, guitar, flute, reeds, bass and percussion.

Join us for the launch of one of the first extensive musicological analyses of this significant Brazilian composer. Peter's book examines the music, philosophy and circumstances surrounding the creation of Jobim's popular songs, instrumental compositions and symphonic works. It reveals not only the many musical influences that formed Jobim's musical output, but also the stylistic peculiarities that were as much the product of a gifted composer as that of the rich musical environment and heritage that surrounded him.

Magda Productions is delighted to be a part of the launch of Peter's latest book. Magda regulars have had the pleasure of Peter's playing multiple times, including with Para Voce, for St Valentine's Day celebrations in 2017 and 2016.

Peter is an Honorary Associate Lecturer at the University of Queensland's School of Music. He is also a nationally recognized jazz bass player and the Musical Director of the Tropical Dance Orchestra, an ensemble created in 2006 that specializes in Jobim's music featuring strings as a distinguishing part of its sound.

Join us for some music, discussion, drinks - and the fabulous ambience of the Brisbane Jazz Club.
